Fight or Flight and Taking Flight Firearms Training provide the essential training needed to meet application requirements.
Before enrolling in this course, you should have already started the application process and possess proficiency in handling your firearm.

To apply for an INITIAL CCW permit, you are required to complete a 16-hour training course, conducted over two 8-hour days, and pass the necessary qualification. All applicants must train with a certified vendor approved by the San Bernardino Sheriff. The Hi-Desert Rod and Gun Club is an authorized training vendor, Fight or Flight and Taking Flight Firearms Instruction operates under its oversight and conducts this training.
The initial training program consists of two full days, combining classroom instruction with live firearm qualification. Prior to attending, applicants must already possess the skills to safely draw from a concealed position, engage targets with a minimum level of accuracy, and pass with a score of at least 80%. Additionally, firearm handling will be evaluated to ensure safety and compliance with regulations.
Course Overview:
Day 1: Dive into essential topics such as CCW laws, self-defense liability insurance, fear management, selecting the right equipment, handling the aftermath of defensive shootings, and addressing mental health and suicide awareness through an open and critical discussion.
Day 2: Gain practical knowledge on firearm transportation by car or plane, improve situational awareness, navigate police interactions with confidence, explore handgun modifications, complete a written exam, and meet firearm qualification requirements.
Who Is This Course For?
This course is tailored for shooters seeking a California CCW permit through the San Bernardino County Sheriff.
Please note: THIS IS NOT A BEGINNER COURSE. Participants must already possess the skills to engage targets.
You must achieve a passing score of 80% or higher. If you are a novice or beginner, this course is not the right fit for you.
Course Requirements:
- Applicants must be residents of San Bernardino County. Verify your eligibility at www.myccw.us.
- Review the qualification standards on the FAQ page or at www.myccw.us.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Must own a firearm registered in your name in California.
- No felony convictions and not currently on active probation.
Additional Information and Requirements:
Classes are conducted in all weather conditions (rain, wind, or heat). If extreme weather occurs, we may cancel, but classes will proceed in heat and most other conditions.
Firearms Qualifications
You may bring up to three firearms to include on your CCW permit. All firearms must be between .380 and .45 caliber, and they must be UNLOADED. Ammunition must remain in your vehicle. Upon check-in, please have your ID ready and bring the completed form provided on this page.
Range Qualification:
- Shoot 5 rounds from the 5-yard line.
- Perform a magazine change/reload.
- Shoot an additional 5 rounds.
You need a minimum score of 80% to pass the qualification. While the test consists of 10 rounds, please bring 50 rounds of ammunition per firearm to ensure you are adequately prepared.
Important Notice: To successfully complete the CCW course, you must bring all required equipment, including firearms, magazines, and ammunition. Additionally, failure to meet safety and qualification standards will result in the denial of your course completion certificate.
What to Wear: Safety and comfort are our top priorities. Wear closed-toe shoes, durable pants with belt loops, and a baseball cap to shield yourself from the sun and stray brass. Avoid tank tops, low-cut shirts, sweatpants, sandals, or any open-toed footwear.
What to Bring: Pack water, snacks, and your lunch to stay energized throughout the day. Note that we will have a working lunch to maximize productivity, so please come prepared.
Required Documentation: Be sure to download, complete, and bring the following forms with you:
- The "Hold Harmless" agreement for the shooting range.
- The Risk Waiver for Fight or Flight.
- A Firearms Form listing detailed information for each firearm you wish to include on your permit.
Class Schedule:
Notification of specific times will be sent in email. Generally plan on 08:30 AM to 04:30 PM both days.
Course Fees:
The cost of the course is $175 per day, which includes a range use fee.

Cancellation Policy:
If you cancel your reservation at least 72 hours in advance, you will receive a refund minus a $25 administrative fee.
Cancellations made less than 72 hours in advance or failure to attend (no-show) are non-refundable. We appreciate your understanding, as considerable effort goes into preparing these classes, coordinating the venue, and scheduling our instructors. Late cancellations and no-shows not only disrupt our planning but also take away the chance for someone else to participate.
